East Meets West: Advances in Gut Microbiome Effects on Pathophysiology of Human Diseases

 March 5-6, 2016

Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, China

Sponsored by the American Physiology Society

It is our great pleasure to invite you to attend an international symposium entitled "East Meets West: Advances in Gut Microbiome Effects on Pathophysiology of Human Diseases" sponsored by the International Opportunity Program Award, the American Physiological Society. This would be a 2-Day International Symposium/Workshop with US researchers and Chinese researchers and students. The symposium will be hosted by Yangzhou University, Jiangsu province, China, on March 5-6, 2016.

The human body harbors billions of microorganisms (including eukaryotes, archaea, bacteria and viruses) collectively referred to as the ‘microbiome’ that represents the largest exo-organ. Only recently have we begun to appreciate the role of microbiome in health and diseases. Environmental factors and change of life style including diet significantly shape human microbiome which in turn appears to modify gut barrier function affecting nutrient & electrolyte absorption and inflammation. Microbial metabolites may impact a number of host functions and are thus implicated in a variety of pathophysiological conditions, including intestinal disorders e.g IBD and diarrhea, obesity, asthma, and even brain development. Approaches that can reshape the gut microbiome represent a reasonable strategy for potential therapeutic strategies.

The symposium includes the following four programs:

  1. General Concept of Gut Microbiota and its relevance to health

  2. Epidemiology of infectious diseases in China and USA

  3. Genetics and host-microbial interactions

  4. Environmental effects on gut microbiome

Speakers include two outstanding investigators, Dr. Jun Sun and Dr. Pradeep K. Dudeja, from the Department of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA. Their research emphasizes on gut microbiome and its pathophysiologic effects on inflammation, cancer, and metabolisms. Several investigators from local universities, including the College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Medicine, and College of Biological Science and Biotechnology of Yangzhou University and Nanjing Medical University will also give presentations in this symposium.

Call for abstract

We encourage junior faculty, postdoctors, and graduate students to submit your abstract for oral presentations in the symposium. Outstanding abstracts will be selected by the award committee for oral presentation and a monetary award ($100 per awardee).

Abstract submission:

  1. Not more than 500 words

  2. Nonstructural format (similar to journal Infection & Immunity)

  3. Deadline:Feb.28, 2015

  4. Email to: qcli@yzu.edu.cn
