Course Description:

This is a graduate-level course designed to provide foundational knowledge and advanced training in the principles and applications of bio-separation engineering, with a focus on systematic approaches to the purification and recovery of biological products. The course emphasizes the integration of engineering principles, biochemical interactions, and process design to address challenges in downstream bioprocessing. Topics will explore the interplay between biological material properties (e.g., protein structure, cell fragility) and engineering parameters (e.g., mass transfer, hydrodynamic forces) to optimize separation efficiency and product quality. Key themes include chromatography, membrane filtration, electrophoresis, and emerging technologies such as continuous processing and single-use systems. The course is structured to serve as a cornerstone for advanced studies in bioprocess engineering, biotechnology, or related fields, equipping students with both theoretical expertise and practical problem-solving skills for industrial and research applications.
